Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird for Microsoft Exchange mail

Microsoft Exchange is the widely used mail solution in buisiness world. Microsoft Outlook is the email client used with this . But if we have to configure mail in our Linux machine, we have to go for some alternative email clients . Mozilla Thunderbird is a good alternative for Outlook. It is also pre-installed in many distros (like Ubuntu 13.10 )To configure Mozilla Thunderbird for Exchange mail , we can use an addon - ExQuilla. This addon is able to connect to Exchange 2007, 2010 and latest 2013 also.

Installing TFTP Server on Ubuntu

TFTP Server is usefull for PXE booting or configuring automatic back up of Cisco routers and Switches etc. Installing TFTP Server can be done in a few steps :

We are going install TFTP Server on a machine running Ubuntu ( version 10.04 32 bit Desktop Edition).

Steps to Install and Configure TFTP Server on Ubuntu

  1. Step 1: Install TFTP Server
  2. Either you can install using command line or Go to Ubuntu Software center. In command line type"sudo apt-get install tftpd-hpa" Or Search for tftpd-hpa in Software Center and click install

Firewall in Ubuntu

How to set up a firewall in Ubuntu ?

Firewall is already in built into your Linux kernel. You just want to configure it properly for your needs !

Firewall is for filtering all the traffic which is headed into or out of your computer. In Linux Kernel , netfilter subsystem take care of this traffic. You just add the rules for accepting, rejecting or denying the traffic.

How to add rules into netfilter ?

 Use the IPTABLES . Iptables are really complex and flexible . See Basic How to of Iptables here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo  . 

UFW, Uncomplicated FireWall

There are many high level user interfaces for this Iptables. One is pre-installed with all Ubuntu distros higher that 8.04 , ie UFW or Uncomplicated FireWall . See more here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UFW .  

GUFW, a Graphical Interface for UFW

Installing / Uninstalling .deb files in Ubuntu

In Ubuntu , the package files are in .deb files . To install the packages file , you should be having administrative password.


Installing .deb debian package file in Ubuntu


  • Double click the .deb file , it will be automatically opened with the GDebi Package manager and you can install it
  • From command line , use this command to install a package .
    sudo dpkg -i PACKAGEFILE.deb

Uninstalling a package in Ubuntu

  • From command line, use this command
    sudo dpkg -r PACKAGENAME

Fossmeet 2011

FOSSMeet, an annual event on Free and Open Source Software at NIT Calicut, brings to you a gamut of talks in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) along with a number of workshops, bofs and video conferences. The fest, the fourth largest of its kind in India, draws FOSS enthusiasts from all over India. Year after year, we expand our horizon and endeavor to ensure that innovative thoughts and ideas get every opportunity to realize their potential, release it and share it. The 2011 edition of the event is scheduled to be held from Feb 4th to 6th. Do visit our website.

The event is jointly organized by a group of professional student organizations, namely the IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Student Branch(NIT Calicut), FOSSCell NIT Calicut and Computer Society of India (CSI) Student Chapter(NIT Calicut) in association with the Computer Science and Engineering Association, NIT Calicut.

Software Freedom Day 2010

Change is FOSSible

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual worldwide celebration for promoting use of Free/Open source softwares(FOSS) as a competitive alternative to proprietary software in education,government ,buissiness , and other applications.  SFD is a public education effort with the aim of increasing awareness of Free Software and its virtues, and encouraging its use.
  This year , SFD 2010 will be held on September 18th Saturday.

One Laptop Per Child ( OLPC) Project

The One Laptop Per Child Association,(OLPC) is a U.S. non-profit organization set up to oversee the creation of an affordable educational device for use in the developing world. Its mission is "To create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning." Informally the chairmen says that the mission is to eliminate poverty. Its current focus is on the development, construction and deployment of the XO-1 laptop.

The goal of the foundation is to provide children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment, and express themselves. To that end, OLPC is designing a laptop, educational software, manufacturing base, and distribution system to provide children outside of the first-world with otherwise unavailable technological learning opportunities.

FOSS meet 2010 at NIT calicut

FOSSMeet is an annual event on Free and Open Source Software at National Institute of Technology Calicut. This event brings together FOSS enthusiasts from all over India. The 2010 edition of the event is scheduled to be held during February 5 to 7, 2010.

It started as FLOSS Meet @ NIT Calicut in 2005 which was a single day event. It is being conducted at NIT Calicut annually since then. During this period, it has evolved into one of the biggest Free Software conferences in India.

FOSSMeet 2010 is the 6th edition of this attempt at popularizing Free and Open Source Software in India.

FOSS.IN 2009 at Bengaluru


FOSS.IN is one of the world’s largest Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) events, held annually in India. The event is highly focussed on FOSS development and contribution.FOSS.IN 2009 is now going on at NIMHANS center Bengaluru(from Dec 1 - 5).Im so happy to be a part of this big event..Really i can't express the feeling when i see guyz like Kishore bhargava nd Atul chitni ..standing near me..
The talks are also great.
